Slash is one of my favorite guitar players. I’ve seen him live 4 times and actually have a funny video of me and my pal Dan catching the encore to Paradise City in the front row:

Slash has been highly inspirational to me as a guitarist because he approaches the guitar differently than my other favorite players. As much as I love Jimi Hendrix, John Frusciante, Tom Morello, Jimmy Page etc…. Slash has a different approach, tone, melodic nature and an insane technique to his playing that’s both fascinating and VERY difficult.

As a player, I’ve decoded Slash’s style and have been sharing it with beginners and intermediates over in my course on JamPlay called “In The Style of Slash”.

The biggest thing with Slash’s style is his unique approach to soloing which in my experience is more how I would imagine a Jazz guitarist approaches solos and maps out the fretboard.

If I were to break down the overall concept of Slash’s style, he’s playing to the chord changes and has the fretboard mapped out to play over top of chords which makes very melodic and musical tones pop out. Most Blues and Rock guitar players don’t do this (even if they are awesome players).
