Without a doubt, Albert King is one of the best guitarists of all time. As a guitar teacher, I frequently ask people who their all time favourite guitarist is. There are two names that come to mind that are far more common than any other names.
Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Jimi Hendrix. I totally agree. SRV and Hendrix are both amazing guitarists who still are still extremely influential on modern music.
But here’s the thing.
You know who Hendrix and SRV stole their licks from? Albert King. Albert King was truly the original electric blues guitarist. If you are familiar with the music of Hendrix and SRV but not Albert King, I would highly suggest you go listen to an Albert King record. You will be blown away. But be aware. You might start to respect SRV a little bit less when you find out nearly everything he played was a rip off of King.
But there’s nothing wrong with copying or stealing musical ideas. This is always the way music has been, and it is the way music continues to evolve. Your “sound” is simply a combination of the influences you listen to, and the stuff you learn on the guitar. If you are a big fan of an artist, and you learn enough of their music, you will start to sound like them.
So let’s all do what SRV and Jimi did, and learn some Albert King! It seemed to benefit their guitar playing a pretty significant amount!
